Intermediate

Used at: Medium

When a digit in a box appears only in one row (or column), it can be eliminated from that row (or column) in other boxes.

Pointing Pair — Explained

A Pointing Pair occurs when a digit within a box appears only in one row (or column). It can be eliminated from that row in adjacent boxes.

When to Use

Mid-game when candidates need narrowing. Pairs well with Box-Line Reduction.

Common Mistakes

Not checking whether the digit truly appears in only ONE row. Check carefully for scattered candidates.

Tips

Look for digits forming a straight line within a box. Horizontal = row, vertical = column eliminations.

Pointing Pair Steps

1

Find a box with a line

Find a digit whose candidates in a box are all in the same row or column.

2

Check adjacent boxes

Look in the same row/column of adjacent boxes.

3

Apply elimination

Eliminate the digit from that row/column in adjacent boxes.
